What is the story of the ``Big Pencil``?
In the 1950s, Mr. John Campbell Findlay had an idea for the businesses in Wytheville along US 11 to advertise by having a large object on the exterior that depicted the business. He had the 30-foot pencil constructed and displayed outside of his store, The Letter Shop. Though the idea did not catch on, the “Big Pencil” still serves as an historical reminder of another era.
